Merkan-English Dictionary #11

Still trying to combobulate1 my readers on both sides of the Pond, but I tells ya, sometimes it feels like I'm fighting a losing battle.

Sticky tape

What could possibly be simpler than a roll of transparent, sticky tape? In the UK, the most popular brand is Sellotape, but just to confuse Merkans we also have Scotch Tape. Made in Merka, not Scotchland.
Scotch Tape
Ok for wrapping tins, steel boxes and that but not so great for taping up parcels.

Sticky tape is sometimes confused with stickybackedplastic, as seen on Blue Peter, but that's another material altogether.
Stickybackedplastic

btw, if you're visiting Australia, and fancy a bit of slap and tickle, whatever you do, don't ask for Durex in the chemist's shop. In Oz, Durex are best known for making sticky tape and it's hella hard unwrapping it from your taradiddle.

Keep those suggestions rolling in!

1 Opposite of discombobulate

  2. Here only Dora the Explorer calls it "sticky tape." Everyone else just calls it tape, unless they're referring to masking tape or electrical tape or painter's tape or what-have-you. Calling it sticky tape is like saying stinky poop. What other kind of poop is there?

  3. You swab a sticky poop deck... Of course that's just bringing Q-tips into the conversation.

And whatever you do, don't look up "Swab the poop deck" in the urban dictionary like I accidentally did.

  4. Here in Merka, that stickybackedplastic is called contact paper. It was really big for crafts projects in the '70's...

I haven't seen THAT sort of Scotch tape in years. My dad used to have a reel-to-reel recorder and would record music from his LP's. He would also record himself talking up the songs like a radio DJ...

Marie - My poops smell like rainbows.

Laurie - Er, ok, I won't. But I might look it up in Roger's Profanisaurus. My brother always gets me the best birthday prezzies.

Debi - Mag tape was pretty cool in its day. But so were shellsuits.

John - Quack, quack, oops, as DLT used to say.

  7. This inspired me to actually look up why Scotch Tape is called Scotch Tape. Turns out to be derogatory! Surprised the Politically-Correct people haven't called for a name change.

  8. Jacki - Yes, I did know that. Found out way back on Monday.
